Contemporary Picture Book Illustration in Germany
Interesting exhibition on book illustrations. It's on till Saturday 30 March 2008Central Lending Library, National Library Building (Admission free).
It will be moved to Jurong Regional Library
from 02-27 Apr.
Worth the trip if you are around the area.

Anthony Lister
Check out art by Anthony Lister here. His main theme is superheroes but with very strange proportions. Looks like he has deconstructed them and assembled them together in his own way. I like his bumpy lines which he uses to create the texture if the suits. His lines look randomly and recklessly placed but somehow they miraculously work. Looking at his studio shots, the paintings are huge. Not something people would imitate easily coz it looks like too much work to squeeze paint over large canvases.

fairy tale
A personal project. The story pop out in pieces while doing the painting. Put it together afterward. My 1st acrylic paint after a very long while. Still love the traditional way! It was fun!

Wave of Love

There is a legend in a fisherman village–a mystical love story of a
little angel and an octopus.
The little angel lived high up above the heavenly sky and the octopus lived deep down under the hazardous sea. Fortuitously, they fell deeply in love. They had to go through great sacrifices and called on all their courage just to be together as the distance between them was an indomitable obstacle. After fighting the merciless waves and relentless winds, the laborious journey broke the curse. Their dream was realized and they lived happily ever after...
One day, a fisherman encountered a storm in the middle of the ocean. The vigorous wind tried to capsize his boat as the death god waited hungrily to hook his soul. At that spur of the moment, a flare of cyan light shone on the unusual purple wave and pierced through the ruthless sea. That blinding glare swept the nightmare away and a calm sea was revived.
This incident reminded the villagers of their childhood story.
That it was the goodwill of the little angel and octopus that saved the fisherman's life. He was indeed blessed to have witnessed the miracle.
People believe that the little angel and octopus will bring light to disasters when their hearts meet. This magical moment has been a legend since and it is named the "Wave of Love".

Illustrations for W&T Wedding and Travel magazine
I wanted to experiment with a style that is different from the usual fashion illustration styles. But keeping in mind the main objective - showcasing the jewellery that would be placed on the "models". And secondly, to allow for a very tight crop. (shown here is the wide crop.) Was struggling to decide if jewellery stood out better on a dark or light background. But in the end decided on a lighter one coz it allowed the models to look more bridal. (it's a bridal magazine). I used black ink on newsprint paper. photographed patterns from a pattern book. Arranged them together in photoshop. Added colours in photoshop using the linear dodge function. The colours actually look better on the real print.

experiments in photoshop
A character sketch on photoshop. Was experimenting using just a hard edge brush and opacity. Then used "posterize" under image adjustments in photoshop to get this effect. I liked how it turned out.

OIC INTERVIEW #5: ADELINE AND KRIS
K: Hello I'm Kristal. Ok, You.
A: I'm Adeline. We work in the same office during the day.
.. u guys are colleagues... So you're not full-time illustrators?
WHY NOT!
K: (who is this imaginary person asking questions?)
A: I think for now would like to have some breathing space between drawing jobs. At the end of the day I want to go home looking forward to drawing things i like, not dreading the thought of picking up the pencil to do changes. I'm just afraid that might happen if i go into it full-time....
K: Yeah, drawing makes you really happy... so it would suck BIG TIME if id hate to pick up the pencil. plus theres so many things u wanna do just for yourself, if u always have to draw something for work, its such a drag, to me la. Oh and i guess because with this attitude we'd be broke. (imaginary person that asks questions makes me uneasy. *suspicious*)
When did you get interested in drawing?
K: Honestly, don't remember when, just something that a kid does. and lol i've got the peter pan complex.
A: Started drawing on my ladybird storybooks. I used a pen because i thought using a pen was very adult.
K: or like.. getting caned for drawing nonsense on walls and cupboards, Haha, ok then what's the most awesome thing about DRAWING, to YOuUuU?
A: Is not so good at talking, or writing, or singing so i express myself this way.
K: ok! **AGREES!** but i do think you play the invisible piano exceptionally well.
A: Why thank you. We should make a band sometime. I like the sound of your whistle. you whistle like a bird

A: ZoukOut 12 hr party peoples--- Timeout Mag. about the 5 stereotypes of people who attend zoukout: (left to right) the sponsor, the angmoh tourist, the seasoned clubber, the poser and the chunky beach hunk. They wanted it to be done in a certain style, like nicole kenney. It was the best experience i had so far, maybe what you call beginner's luck. It was Kris who intro-ed this job to me ;-)
K: Coz ure drawings, i think were PERFECT for it. =)
ok.... this one : ..for all the Pretty Boys.. done for Arena Magazine Singapore. Deadlines can get kookoo, but things always run smoother when u like the subject matter. haha. Arena was really open to whatever stuff i had in mind. So the only issue (as usual) was: time. After reading the articles, if , we'd discuss a little before i did the drawings. But mostly they just let me be, kinda lucky, me thinks. next!
A: oh, oh, i admire you so. Could you show me your oldest personal drawing so i can print out and stick on my wall?
K: *BLUSH* This is not the oldest, but its quite old la hor? Adeline, meet Poppy Seed.
ooook! We must exchange. Gimme yours NAO!
A: Hi meet the photo of random dodgy squirrel. Couldn't find the original anymore. must have thrown it away because he's so ugly. ARGCK.
K: BISH me lieks. Dats one Sessie Squirrel.

& ya, they signs my copy of grafuck 3. I signzzz theirs tooooo! AWSUM! Very naice people who are super friendly to a nobody like me.
Would've been awsumer if all my lovelies were there *waves like star on tv at invisible camera*

K: Ok serious : It was damn cool meeting all these different people. Was so bloody nervous..but the guys at Gallery Nucleus were really warm and did i say super nice already? When I was getting the prints ready, i had no idea what to do. Lucky me, they were patient and didn't kick me out for asking a lot of questions. Asking questions is good. Got the prints framed..sent them over.. the gallery took care of everything else. I think i was more stoked taking pics of Audrey Kawasaki's work , getting the other artists to sign my copy..and picking out stuff to buy in the store. Hahahaha

OIC PORTRAIT DAY @ MAAD. RED DOT MUSEUM. MARCH 1, SATURDAY 2-7PM
Get more practice on those figure drawing skills and get paid for it. Bring your pencils, inks, watercolours or any other favourite tools for another OIC Portrait Day! How it works: A customer sits for 10-15mins. All of us draw. Customer gets to choose and buy his/her favourite drawing. If yours gets chosen, you get $8 for each drawing. If not, hey it's good practice and you'll just get better. Meet at 2pm and please be punctual. We'll go somewhere nice (but not too costly) to eat after it ends. See you there. Everyone welcome!
