Pekomikon 2009

I was invited to attend as a panel in Pekomikon 2009 at PWTC KL this Saturday, April 25th (tomorrow) and will be giving a talk on my experience working outside Malaysia, and how I springboard my career in comics internationally. Sonny Liew is also one of the panel guests on that day.

I'm bringing some work in progress stuff and behind the scene materials exclusively for the presentation. My session starts at 11:30 AM to noon.

Anyone going to KL this weekend, hope to see you there! Goddamnit Dr. Sketchy!!!

White Tottori Desert Cockroach.

Artwork contributed to The Institute of Critical Zoologists, who is presenting “If a tree falls in the forest”, with the aim to question common views of and relationships with animals, and challenge these pre-conceived ideas by making subversive changes to the way we observe them. “If a tree falls in the forest” is made up of three parts: a live performance titled “Before the flood”, “Kings” an exhibition of rare animals never before seen in Singapore and “Soon Bo’s Cold Room and Shelves”, an exhibition of photographs. 2 - 20 May, 11am to 8pm daily at The Substation Gallery. Admission free.

A random sketch using the Staedtler triplus ball pen instead and black ink brush. + photoshop.

We start off Monday with a new weekly installment – ASK AN ARTIST

This week Mike (aka The Chairman) interviews Zid about his experience at the OIC-Portrait Day event

What do you look forward to at "PORTRAIT DAY"?

For me, it's the diverse participants for portraiture and ultimately able to see how different artists work.

The former is the excitement when you see facial features that really challenge your “eye-brain-hand” coordination. The latter is relatively a reason for me to engage in the discourse of influencing and be influenced in my creative process. Finally the chicks... Hey at least I'm honest about it.

How do you make your session fruitful?

By having my drawings sold! Hehe, naw, by being able to capture likeness within the given time slot, and having satisfying results by means of visually significant output.

What is your absolute fave tool at the sessions?

I'm more of a "use whatever you have at that moment" if not "use the cheapest most crappiest tool and make the best out of it" kind of artist. A ballpoint pen would do for the base lines and I'd just use anything I can find in my pencil case for finishing touches then and there. Dried markers, highlighters, correction pen, magic pen, name it. No particular favourite.

What have you seen or learn from a fellow OICnik at such sessions?

That you guys are elite and carry fancy tools! Which is awesome, made me feel like a cheapskate! I'm amazed at how you guys can capture likeness and stay focused doing it the whole day. At some point in every session when I zone out, the results are always uneasy to my eyes.

Your favourite style of portraits or favourite portrait drawing of the moment.

Of course, Kent Williams' all the time! (Attached) and also check this link

Figure Drawing @ Substation

Hey guys! Scanned the drawings from Saturday at Substation. Had to double-scan each of them since my flatbed scanner can only take up a4 sized papers:

I don't wanna flood this post so if you feel like seeing the rest of the 12 scans, you can find them here.

Hope you guys had a great weekend!

Over the shoulder

Just feel like drawing this..

Portrait Of A Drunk

Proposal for Health Promotion Board for Awareness of Binge Drinking

The idea is to show the real risk of binge drinking by putting a face on the
problem. Hence the choice to do a classic portrait drawing of an unglamorous drunk person with details of dry skin, puffy eyes with traces of vomit.
