If Photoshop were real...

Original post from http://drawn.ca
When I first saw Motherboard Cake (I made one and you may see it on my blog), I was like LOL. How creative and ingenious can one get? Then I saw this "real" photoshop and I was ROFL at how people can go all the way out to make something so, so innovative and yet fun. DRAW ME: Herd Mentality

Herd mentality
[From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia]

Herd mentality describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors, follow trends, and/or purchase items. Examples of the herd mentality include the early adopters of high technology products such as cell phones and iPods, as well as stock market trends, fashions in apparel, cars, home décor, etc. Social psychologists study the related topics of group intelligence, crowd wisdom, and decentralized decision making. People in these herds are broken up into two groups, explains Friedrich Nietzsche, a philosopher who coined the phrase. One lended itself to the religious points of views- their beliefs and how those dictated their actions- while the other lended itself to influence by the media- more liberal and based upon what others perceive as 'right' (following trends, social norms, etc.).

I think we see ourselves in some way belonging to a herd. Like Illustration Friday, I am posting this so we could illustrate and interpret it with our doodles and illustrations. Only when you feel like doing so.

GoMediaZine

I was reading the previous entry regarding pricing and rights, and then I remembered there was this article written by GoMediaZine some time ago. Took me a while to find it, here's the links:

GoMediaZine: A Designer’s Guide to Pricing

This article will cover:
What should I charge?
Flat rate or hourly billing?
How can I avoid being stiffed?
Should I have contracts?
Avoiding “Busters”
Do I need an accountant?
What’s a “Kill Fee”?
Pitching.
How do I send invoices and track sales?

Another article I thought was pretty interesting is this one on design piracy

Some of it may not necessarily be relevant, but I find GoMediaZine has many good articles with insights and tips about how the industry works, as well as good tutorials/essays.

Art Journaling - another creative venture

http://flickr.com/photos/hneufeld/sets/72157608097643631/

I'm posting these as a reminder to myself that there are many ways to a creative route [do I make sense?], and it is not always about money and profit and etc... it is about expressing a passion. Every artist in this blog has inspired me in one way or the other to push a little more over the edge. I am really proud to be part of this family that lives and breathes art, and I'm glad to have such a rich source of ideas and energy flowing through here. Thanks.

Artful Food - Creative Food

Dark Roasted Blend has posted a massive gallery featuring creative uses of food as the inspiration, material or canvas for some delicious (and not-so-delicious) pieces of artwork.[source: drawn.ca]

Illustration Pricing and Rights

Hi Everyone, I have some questions about pricing and rights and was hoping to get some sound advice. 1) Are any pricing guidelines for illustration here in Singapore according to the medium it's used for as well as size? 2) Do licensing rights and contracts apply here? As companies presume we've "sold" the copyrights to our art to them according to what we've charged.
3) For the full-timers - how do you protect and feed yourself considering there are so many out there trying to take advantage of us? I've been using the graphic artist's guild handbook as a guide tho' bearing in mind they price not just in USD, but also way higher. Whereas clients here think illustration should come cheap and do take advantage most times. There are times I feel a little discouraged... Thank you for your time thinking about those questions and I look forward to hearing from you all soon. Btw, am I the only one who's got such questions to ask? :)

childhood games

I think for the older generation, there was no PSP,or DS and we have to invent games and one of them is to hunt for ants, where you get a stalk of grass.. find an anthole and "fished" them out.. and see who can catch the most...

New Kid in Town

Hello everyone! Fresh meat :D It's a pressure to keep up with the elites here so I'll make this objective.

My name is Zid. I was introduced to OIC by Mr.B. I'm a painting major fine art graduate from KL now residing in Singapore. I keep a day job as a digital artist in the East Coast to make ends meet since 2 years ago. I have been doing comics all my life, published a couple of series in a number of magazines, and I have a book out last month with Steve Niles, called City of Dust. I record music in my spare time to keep me stimulated.

Work has made me become stagnant and I hope by having this place to exchange ideas or simply interacting with fellow professionals in various discourse will open new doors for me to reshape and re-explore art as what it is supposed to be - fluid.

I'll post some of my other stuff one at a time but for this entry I'll put up my series on Auguste Rodin's Thinker sculpture:

Pleased to meet you!

Sketch from photographs

Took a bunch of photos when we were traveling since I did not have the luxury of time to spend the whole afternoon siting on a sweet spot. I think most artists would do a very quick composition study, take a pix and then headed home to complete the painting. This was what I did here, a watercolor study from a picture I took.

Wacom - my use of the side buttons

First and foremost, I would like to thank Mindflyer for posting the video and tips of making our workflow more efficient - which inspired me to explore the side buttons of the Wacom Intuos 3 a little bit more. Currently I am using a 9X12 in my office. If you are not using a Intuos 3, this might not apply to you, and go get one you.... Ok. I have diabled all the side buttons and even the touchpad becos they are getting in my way (depending on how you setup your wacom and your keybpard), and causing my canvas to zoom in and out by itself for no reason at all. After reading Mindflyer's post, I decided to give it a try again. You can see my latest setup - I use Keystrokes (B for brush and [ & ] for brush sizes) for my sidebuttons, turning them into Brush, and brush sizes, so I am free from reaching out with my left hand to the bracket keys which is a nuisance because they are so far far far away on my right. Well, let me know what you think!

workflow: Maxing your Wacom Tablet

Those who knows me will know that I love to explore and fiddle with my Macs and wacom. I highly recommend this video on how you can fully utilise your wacom tablet by setting up shortcuts for those side buttons. Very useful in Photoshop for zooming and calling up functions like change brush sizes or special menus. If you keep going to the top menu bar for something, setting up a shortcut to those side buttons will make your job flow easy. Please feel free to share your workflow or tips.

Koji Yamamura

An autograph drawing of Mt. head by Koji Yamamura during his seminar at animation nation here. The animation below was completely handdrawn using traditional animation techniques. The shadows were created on a seperate layer to give it a 3D feel.

Custom Paper Toys

Americans voted today for who they would want to govern the US for the next few years. To celebrate early victory and support for Obama, http://www.custompapertoys.com/ gives away a free Build-O-Bama template so you can make your own paper Obama toys. I made mine and carried on to make Zombie Freud... plenty of time on my hands.

I also downloaded a free blank template to put myself into a box caricature. Yup! That's my Spongebob Square Mii.

OIC PORTRAIT DAY, 1 NOV, SATURDAY 2-7PM, RED DOT MUSEUM.

The next portrait day is happening on 1 Nov, Saturday at the red dot museum as part of MAAD. It's where you, the illustrators, get to draw customers as a group. If your drawing gets selected, you get $8 in your pocket. If not, it's still good figure drawing practice for you. Not to mention that it will be fun to catch up with other fellow illustrators. Anyone interested to draw may participate as well (oic members and non-members alike) Booth fee will be $80 divided by number of participants. Sign up under comments section, bring your own drawing tools and paper and be there at 2pm this saturday! Contact 96806572 or email to OIC  for more info.
(Thanks to me for the poster illustration.)

Lisa Yuskavage

I came across her work while researching feminist artists for an essay. I like how the renaissance painting influences is utilized in her contemporary subjects.

Lisa Yuskavage (born 16 May 1962) is a contemporary American figurative painter known for her overtly sexualized representations of the painted female nude. (Wikipedia Info)
