Venom Fan Art

Something I worked on lately, two versions:
1) a more painterly one, aim of this (after seeking some counsel from more experienced digital painters) was to create a nice pose and some believable monster anatomy + lighting effects...
2) my initial version, infused partially with my regular 'graphic' approach. alittle bit of chinese painting influences...

it was fun :]

hi, i think it's a good effort for a digital painting. But somehow it doesn't have the impact you intended it to have. It cld be the pose and cropping. It doesn't communicate enough danger. and a wider crop might give it more context. Since he is in a black suit. perhaps a lighter tone behind him might make him stand out more. cld add textures to the smooth background. and blend him more with the background. i would make him hanging down from the top of the pic with his head forward and tongue lunging forward. maybe more stylish. hope it helps. keep at it!

Both versions look unfinished to me. Basic styling of the character is quite nice but heavily lack of details in texture, reflections of his big eyes (hence it doesn't come to live) and so on.the lighting look like a passport photo lighting. not dramatic enough. ummm...just my honest opinion here. hope you don't mind. :-p

Ah thanks for the comments ppl, no worries I'm always open to critique and suggestions. Yea I guess the stage I'm at now is styling, haha, need to improve on fundamentals.

This new hobby is pretty fun ekeke...and like all hobbys I wanna practice till it's cool....hehe..

actually Venom, due to his mutation, is capable of very dynamic and interesting pose. i think you could have done something along that.

how did you do this piece? care to share the steps you took?

ah yea I actually did this in a rush and it was purely for recreation between regular print design projects, hence I went with a simple portrait style. (full anatomy would have taken forever given my limited experience with digital painting). Wasn't trying to achieve realism, just a try out of sorts to see how far I could take it.

weapon of choice: photoshop, steps: (bear in mind I am no expert and everything listed here is from trial and error and the advice of people who are highly skilled at digi painting...)

1) I did a rough sketch using my wacomm (best / most useful thing I bought this year haha)

2) My canvas is A3 at 300dpi.

3) painted in the light and dark tones using the default brush, set at 65% hardness, etc

4) Once full B/W version done, added in the main colours all on one layer above, tweaked it till I was sort of satisfied.

5) added in lighter parts over the colour layer, opacity set to around 45%

6) For finer details I used the pen tool to path out the shapes (eg eyes) then I created a duplicate layer and set it to gaussain blur.

7) If you look at the first one, the gums have been fixed and pulled back to heighten the 'feeling'... Also venom is looking over the shoulder instead of just straight ahead, well sort of...

8) I referenced pics of gums, animals etc for the fleshy / gum / jaw bits.

was aiming for a sleek / more restrained looking venom.

hope that helps. Cheers...

Hi jon,
When it comes to digital painting or realistic painting, u have to rem these few things:

-material/surface: knowing what material it is help define the reflectiveness and texture smooth or bumping stuff liddat. noeing this makes u understand how to render better :)

-light source: intensity of light source. take the head as a basic sphere; if the light was @ the top it shld be darker when it close to da chin. Cant rem the exact term fall off light??

try burning and dodging fast way to edit ur lightning.

Hope it helps. Im still trying to get it right myself too. T_T Ganbatte man!
